TRAVEL TIPS

Accommodations

In Montréal and Québec City you have a choice of luxury hotels, moderately priced modern properties, and small older hotels with fewer conveniences but sometimes more charm. Options in small towns and in the country include large, full-service resorts; small, privately owned hotels; roadside motels; and bed-and-breakfasts. Even outside the cities it's a good idea to make reservations before you plan to pull into town.

Expect accommodations to cost more in summer than in the colder months (except for places such as ski resorts, where winter is high season). When making reservations, ask about special deals and packages. Big-city hotels that cater to business travelers often offer weekend packages, and many city hotels offer rooms at up to 50% off in winter. If you're planning to visit Montréal or Québec City or a resort area in high season, book well in advance. Also be aware of any special events or festivals that may coincide with your visit and fill every room for miles around. For resorts and lodges, remember that winter ski season is a period of high demand, and plan accordingly.

Apartment and House Rentals

The Gazette (www.montrealgazette.com), Montréal's English-language daily, has a wide selection of rental listings.

Bed-and-Breakfasts

B&Bs, which are also known as gîtes in Québec, can be found in both the country and the cities. For assistance in booking these, be sure to check out B&B websites (www.gitesetaubergesdupassant.com and www.bedandbreakfast.com are good resources for B&Bs throughout the province). Room quality varies from house to house as well, so ask to see a few rooms before making a choice.

The nonprofit organization Association de l'Agrotourisme et du Tourisme Gourmand du Québec has extensive listings of B&Bs, both urban and rural, as well as farms that take paying guests.

Hotels

Canada doesn't have a national rating system for hotels, but Québec's tourism ministry rates the province's hotels and bed-and-breakfasts; the stars are more a reflection of the number of facilities and amenities than of the hotel's performance. Hotels are rated zero to three stars (B&Bs, zero to four suns), with zero stars or suns representing minimal comfort and few services and three stars or four suns being the very best. All hotels listed have private baths unless otherwise noted.
